Since 1996, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients in the Socios En Salud Tuberculosis Program not only faced the burden of the disease, but also the social determinants surrounding their care, attention and cure, a context that put them at risk of abandoning their treatment due to the lack of social support in terms of paperwork, food, medicines, cleaning supplies, housing, among others. Therefore, Socios En Salud provided care, accompaniment and social assistance.

In 2018, in order to continue supporting patients in vulnerable situations and provide a comprehensive response to the right to health, the Socios En Salud Social Protection Program was officially created.

“Diseases are not only cured with pills, many people do not have food to counteract the side effects of treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively address the patient’s recovery, through care, accompaniment and social assistance,” shared Genaro Anco, head of the Social Protection Program at Socios En Salud.

Currently, the program integrated the strengthening of occupational skills in young people in the district of Carabayllo, in order to boost employability in the short and medium term to increase economic income.

Our contributions in social protection:

  • 4342 people received some type of social support and humanitarian aid from the Socios En Salud Social Protection Program.
  • 72% of 215 of the common pots in the district of Carabayllo received food support to address food insecurity generated by COVID-19.
  • 88 supports in educational training to break the gaps in access to education, 10 academic scholarships and 4 supports in occupational skills training.
