Socios En Salud participated in the Replenishment Conference organized by the Global Fund, which aimed to raise US$18 billion to eradicate HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and save 20 million lives over the next three years.

From September 19-22 in New York City, USA, the Global Fund brought together a number of international organizations to share their community experiences in strengthening the health system in the face of health crises.

The general director of Socios En Salud, Leonid Lecca, participated in the resupply event organized by the Global Fund. We share this experience:

  • What objectives does the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria seek to achieve?

The Global Fund seeks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by building resilient and sustainable health systems. This fund serves to finance projects in countries with the highest rates of cases of these 3 diseases.

This year the Global Fund expects to achieve the goal of at least 18 billion dollars, a budget that would save 20 million people, where six billion will be used to strengthen health systems and prepare them to face pandemics. Also, reduce death rates by 64%, reduce the burden of disease and prevent 450 million infections.

IMPORTANT FACT: The Global Fund has been supporting Peru since 2003

  • What health needs and gaps remain to be filled around the world?

The economic crisis caused by COVID-19 has taken away multiple investments and resources, which left national programs unprotected, which do not have funds earmarked for the care of various diseases, but had to be redirected to respond to the health emergency. This caused a delay of approximately 20 years of progress, making visible the fragility of the health systems. Nevertheless, advantage was taken of this crisis to strengthen laboratories and increase health research.

  • Why was Socios En Salud invited to participate in the replenishment event by the Global Fund?

The Global Fund has been working in Peru for more than 20 years to eradicate diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. In recent years, Socios En Salud has received financing from the Global Fund through the TB Country Project, which aims to complement state actions for the prevention and control of tuberculosis, HIV and COVID-19, prioritizing the gaps and the most affected populations. It also seeks to strengthen the role of civil society in the fight against these diseases and ensure rapid and timely diagnosis.

  • What was the most relevant thing that SES shared?

The contribution of the Global Fund has allowed us to expand the initiative: “TB Backpack” for the timely detection of TB at a national level with the objective of detecting this disease in time in 12 regions of Peru and saving thousands of lives. As well as, improving oxygen systems and molecular laboratories to detect COVID-19 during the pandemic.”

Also, it was mentioned about the success of health programs in the detection, treatment and prevention in tuberculosis and HIV, with community participation as a key and complementary pillar to improve the response towards the diseases and build a strong and resilient health system.

  • What experience did you take away from this event?

“It has been a very gratifying experience to share the impact of the work being done by Socios En Salud in Peru and to learn about the support provided to several countries in the region (Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, etc.). In this way, we have demonstrated that if there are resources that are used efficiently and quickly, important changes can be achieved and the financing of the Global Fund is key to achieve the construction of healthy communities.”

From Socios En Salud we promote our movement for equity in health, through care, training, research and a strong advocacy that goes from the community level to the agencies that drive global health policies. #FightForWhatCounts
