“Preventing breast cancer is in the hands of every woman, we must love life and take care of each other, that is why it is important to spread the importance of getting a checkup on time, so we all take care of ourselves.”

Maria Rosas is Community Health Agent for two years and currently supports the ALMA project, accompanying the participants, in order to perform mammography to prevent breast cancer.

I got involved in the ALMA project because I have a lot of love for the community and whenever I have the possibility to provide support, I will do it, I will be there to give the best of me, also; the issue of breast cancer has enough stigma in the community, especially in women; and it is good to know that there are tools like ALMA from Socios En Salud to prevent this disease.

The follow-up process becomes a delicate issue with the current juncture , the pandemic has been by far the most difficult factor , it makes people interested and / or participants are afraid to go to care because it involves leaving home.

Fortunately, thanks to the trainings we have constantly, we can reach people, provide a clearer look at the process and the disease, clarify doubts and explain the importance of getting checked, be counselors, cancer does not stop because of the pandemia and we provide them with safety measures since the consultation is in an exclusive environment for them.

Perseverance and empathy, is essential for this process, but the commitment to the community and relevance of this issue cannot be overlooked, neither before, nor now with the pandemic. We must take advantage of this tool and take care of ourselves, seek empowerment, overcome stigmas.
