We lead regional summit in Dominican Republic to enhance the role of civil society

Through RINDE - TB, Socios En Salud sought to strengthen the participation of civil society in multisectoral responsibility processes in tuberculosis, with an international meeting that brought together representatives from 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Between April 22 and 24, in the city of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Socios En Salud held a regional summit through its RINDE - TB project to promote the participation of civil society, in line with the political commitments made in September 2023 during the United Nations High Level Meeting on Fighting Tuberculosis (UNHLM 2023).

The event was attended by representatives from the Pan American Health Organization, the National Health Service and the Dominican Republic’s National Tuberculosis Control and Elimination Program. In addition, there was one civil society representative for each of the 12 priority countries in Latin America and the Caribbean: Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Honduras, Paraguay, Argentina and Ecuador.

In the case of countries with a National Social Tuberculosis Observatory, the representative from each territory was appointed by the observatory’s general assembly.

Priority topics at the RINDE - TB regional summit

Based on a technical assistance regional prioritization of topics, based on the Political Declaration of the UN High Level Meeting on TB 2023, 12 broad themes were identified and five of them were prioritized, which are as follows:

  • Primary health care
  • Universal access to all technologies
  • Protection and promotion of human rights
  • Resource mobilization
  • Legal regulatory framework

At the regional summit, these five topics were developed, which made it possible to analyze the issues, as well as the related paragraphs of the Political Declaration, and to discuss in detail the priority aspects that civil society must consider in order to accompany governments in the fulfillment of the commitments established.

RINDE - TB is a project of Socios En Salud that promotes the advocacy of civil society actors and communities affected by tuberculosis (TB) in Latin America and the Caribbean, through its preparation and monitoring of the UNHLM 2023 commitments.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Regional Tuberculosis Social Observatory and the TB Coalition of the Americas, with funding from the Stop TB Partnership/UNOPS through its Challenge Facility for Civil Society Round 11.

Challenge Facility for Civil Society (CFCS) is a grant mechanism of Stop TB Partnership, targeting civil society organizations and people affected by TB to transform the TB response with a human rights, gender equity, people-centered and accountable approach.

RINDE - TB is supported by the Stop TB Partnership/UNOPS, USAID and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
