Partners In Health and MINSA develop face-to-face course on tuberculosis and diabetes

Diabetes is one of the main comorbidities affecting the treatment of tuberculosis.

In 2023, the Demographic and Family Health Survey (Endes) estimated that 1.3 million Peruvians over 15 years of age were living with diabetes mellitus (DM). That is, this disease had an estimated prevalence of 5.5% in the entire national population.

In light of this figure, another emerges in parallel: Peru is one of the countries with the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the world. In 2023 alone, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) identified more than 33,000 new TB cases.

The correlation between these two diseases translates into a person living with diabetes being at greater risk of developing TB. By its very condition, this also means potentially more extensive treatment and longer recovery time.

In that sense, with the aim of strengthening the knowledge of health personnel at the first level of care for an adequate programmatic clinical management of this comorbidity, the first session of the Presential Training Course on Tuberculosis and Diabetes Mellitus (TB-DM) was recently held in conjunction with MINSA, aimed at health professionals from the Directorate of Integrated Health Networks (DIRIS) Lima Sur.

  • Introduction to TB-DM Comorbidity
  •

With a training target of more than 1,200 health professionals, this course paves the way to foster adherence to treatment and control of these diseases at the national level, while promoting prevention and control strategies in health services nationwide. The following sessions will involve health personnel from the other DIRIS, the Regional Health Directorates (DIRESA) and the Regional Health Managements (GERESA).

The course is carried out in the framework of the Country TB-HIV Project, financed by the Global Fund, coordinated by MINSA and the National Multisectoral Health Coordinator (CONAMUSA), and executed by Socios En Salud.
